The shelter Vee works at is a small outfit deep in the country. All rolling hills and wheat fields. âYou make this drive every day?â I ask her.
âNot every day. Just a few days a week. My uncle doesnât want me too distracted from my studies and sometimes I think he just likes being out here by himself with the dogs.â
âOh,â I mumble. âWas he like your dad?â
I know she told me her father was once homeless and Aspen and Fennâs mom helped him out.
âYeah,â she says, but I can tell she doesnât want to say much. âHeâs better now, though.â
I nod. Iâm not one to pry, even though her family history intrigues me.
The driveway is gravel and about a mile long when we pull in. Itâs quaint and doesnât look like a shelter at all. âWait,â I say, throwing my Jeep in park. âIs this where your uncle lives too?â
She opens her door and gets out. âYeah. He keeps the dogs here.â
Oh. Okay. Well, that changes things.
âWhy do you look like youâre about to be sick?â
I roll my eyes. âIâm not about to be sick. I just didnât realize your uncle would be here. You just said he owned it.â
Her brows furrow as she looks at me, blinking several times. âDid you think he was never here?â
I wave her comment away and get out too. âI just thought he owned it. I didnât know heâd be here and Iâd likeââ Iâd have to meet him. âNever mind. Itâs fine. Just took me off guard for a moment.â I reach into the back. âIâll grab our stuff.â
Vee nods slowly. âOkay. Iâll let him know weâre here.â
I grab the bags and follow her up the front porch steps of an old farmhouse. She raps on the screen door, which I can see straight through.
âUncle Mason!â She yells with no answer. She turns to me and tips her chin. âHeâs probably around back. Come on.â
My heart beats erratically. âDonât you think you should call him first before we just go around the back?â
Is this not how her horror movies start?
âDonât be silly. He doesnât mind.â
I find it hard to believe that a Marine doesnât mind if his niece, or whatever she is to him, traipses through his house with a strange guy in tow. Yeah, cue the credits because this movie is going to be over before it begins.
Vee opens the screen door and motions for me to follow. âDid you text Brick the address?â
âYeah. Heâs on his way.â My focus is everywhere but on the conversation.
Veeâs uncleâs place is spacious and rustic, much like youâd think a cabin in the woods would be. But where you would think it would have deer heads hung on the wall, thereâs black and white framed pictures with who I assume is her uncle and a blonde-haired woman. In most of the pictures, they have this German Shepherd dog with them thatâs always staring up at the woman like, he too, loves her.
âThatâs Killer,â Vee says, noticing me staring at the photos.
